Silica Fumes

Silica fume is a highly reactive pozzolan material that is used in relatively small amounts to improve or enhance the properties of concrete. It is a by-product of the smelting process in the silicon and ferrosilicon industry. When high-purity quartz is reduced to silicon at temperatures of about 2000°C, silica vapors are produced, which oxidize and condense to tiny particles in the low temperature zone consisting of noncrystalline (amorphous) silica. It is glassy powder of gray color.
